| Zouave officers often wore a uniform which differed from that of the men. Regulation frock coats were common, with red trousers, braided kepis, and Confederate style cuff lace indicating the officer’s Zouave status. | |||||
Yellow or red braiding on dark blue Zouave jackets looks particularly striking if the braid is painted white first, and then stained with in the appropriate colour. The stain should have a milky consistancy, allowing it to flow into and completely cover the white undercoating.
