Italeri and HaT Industrie Zouaves are easily converted to represent regiments wearing the kepi. Suitable heads with kepis may be scrounged from a variety of ACW infantry sets produced by Airfix, ESCI, IMEX, Italeri, and Revell. The Italeri set of Union Infantry and Zouaves has braided kepis which work well for officer conversion. Zouave officers often wore a uniform which differed from that of the men. Regulation frock coats were common, with red pants, braided kepis, and Confederate style cuff lace.

Yellow or red braiding on dark blue Zouave jackets looks particularly striking if the braid is painted white first, and then stained in the appropriate colour. The stain should have a milky consistancy, allowing it to flow into and completely cover the white undercoating.
