Limes Germanicus, 83–260 A.D.

Limes Germanicus 83–260 A.D.

Reconstruction of the Upper German Limes close to the Roman Saalburg fortification near Frankfurt/Main. The Limes had an unfortified gate at this point which was guarded by a detachment of the Saalburg garrison. The picture shows a section of the palisade as seen from the direction of the enemy. Immediately behind the palisade is a dry ditch and rampart. The patrol route on top of the rampart is approximately 10 meters away from the palisade. The person in the centre of the photo stands on the patrol route. The Saalburg museum features a nice selection of Roman artefacts and reconstructed objects of military and civilian life. There are historic reenactment events on certain weekends.
