The Army of Karl EugenHerzog von WürttembergKarl Eugen received a subsidy to provide 6,000 men for service alongside the French army in time of war. In 1757 only 3,000 men were available, and the ranks had to be filled with unreliable recruits of Protestant faith. Ten infantry and three converged grenadier battalions eventually joined the Austrian army, and fought at Leuthen alongside the Bavarian contingent. In 1759, the promised 15 battalions transferred to Broglie’s army in the Rhineland. Under a similar agreement, 17 battalions served with the Austrian army again in 1760.
Order of Battle at Leuthen, 5th December, 1757Württemberg units served in the Austrian Corps Nadasdy. The two brigades were deployed on the extreme left flank of the line, with the Bavarian regiments on their right. The Württembergers and Bavarians bore the brunt of the Prussian oblique attack. Infanterie-Regiment Prinz Louis was captured, but Württemberg grenadiers managed to withdraw and establish a second defensive position inside the cemetery at Leuthen church.
