Dark Grey No. 46
Dark Grey Nr. 46, subsequently »Black Grey RAL 7021«, the dark grey base colour for large equipment (Großgerät) of the Wehrmacht1 introduced in 1937, which was replaced in February 1943 by the new base colour »Dunkelgelb nach Muster«. Apart from this very dark colour, »Moss Grey RAL 7003«, »Field Grey No. 2, RAL 7009«, and »Aviator Blue Grey RAL 7016« appear to have been used as base colours for grey vehicles as well. Steel helmets, gas mask canisters, mess tins, ammunition boxes and other Kleingerät (small equipment) were initially painted »Field Grey No. 2, RAL 7009«2, from 1935 to war’s end »Field Grey No. 3, RAL 6006«, or »Dark Grey No. 46«, if it was carried on dark grey vehicles.
According to Heeresmitteilung (HMA) army bulletin No. 687 of 2 November 1938, large equipment was to receive disruptive patches of »Dark Brown No. 45, RAL 7017« that covered ⅓ of the dark grey base coat3. However, due to the insufficient contrast between the two colours, this camouflage pattern did not offer any significant advantage over the monochromatic grey base colour, which was standardized with HMA No. 864 of 31 July 19404.
