Leibstandarte Sovereign’s Standard
After the Thirty Years War many European states established standing armies to protect their territories. Cavalry regiments were uniformed, and they received standards of a common design with various base colours chosen to differentiate one regiment of the army from another. The 1st, Headquarters or Leib-Eskadron carried the sovereign’s standard, the other squadrons of the regiment received regimental standards. In life-guard regiments, all squadrons carried sovereign’s standards, sometimes with the exception of the Leib-Eskadron, which received a regimental standard.
