Shade, in colour theory, the mixture of a colour with black, which darkens the colour. In our example above, PRIMAcryl 13.210 »Vanadium Yellow deep« has been shaded with 20 % black and tinted with 20 % white. Combining tint and shade, or mixing with grey, results in a tone. In this case, shading with black also caused a shift in hue from yellow to green. The hue shift can be avoided by darkening the colour with its complementary, or opposite colour on the colour wheel.
