M24 “Chaffee” Light Tank

The M24 “Chaffee” light tank with 75 mm gun M6 entered service in 1944 to replace the earlier M3 “Stuart” and M5 “Stuart” light tanks in the US Army armored reconnaissance squadrons. The first units to receive M24 “Chaffee” light tanks were Troop F, 2nd Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron and Troop F, 42nd Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, both assigned to 2nd Cavalry Group (Mechanized) of XII Corps in Patton‘s Third Army as they rushed to engage in the Battle of the Bulge.

The M24 “Chaffee” light tank entered service too late to play a significant role in World War Two wargames, but it soldiered on as a Cold War recce vehicle in Austrian, Belgian, Danish, Dutch, French, Greek, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, and Turkish armed forces, and remains in service in Third World Countries even today.
