Introduced in the fall of 1944, the Bergepanzer IV armoured recovery vehicle was converted from Pz.Kpfw. IV tank hulls which had been returned for factory repair. The conversion involved removing the turret, planking over the turret ring, and adding a small 2 t jib crane and towing bars.
