File

File.

File (German “Reihe”), in military terminology, a file refers to the soldiers standing one behind the other in a marching formation. On the command »in Reihe – antreten!«, the first soldier takes up the position three steps in front of the commander. All other soldiers fall in one step (80 cm) behind him. The command »in Marschordnung – antreten!« is similar, except that two more files are formed to the left of the first soldier. The three soldiers standing side by side form a Rotte (rota). On the command »rechts/links um!«, the Marschordnung (column of route) changes to a line (of three ranks). The soldiers of one rota now stand one behind the other.
