Roman Legion XIII Gemina
Apulum (Alba Julia)

Legionnaires and auxilia of legio XIII Gemina during the Roman encampment at Aalen. The shields of the two legionnaires are not identical, only one carries the unit inscription: LEG – XIII. Marching behind the legionnaires are Syrian archers who served as auxiliary troops of legio XIII Gemina. The Syrians can be distinguished from other archers serving in the formation by their long tunics and conical helmets. In the course of the battle reenactment at Aalen, heavy infantry of all participating legions staged a mock assault against the archers shown here who defended themselves with impressive volleys of blunted training arrows.
