The Pz.Kpfw. V “Panther” Ausf. A, Sd.Kfz. 171, differs externally from the older Ausführung D by the ball-shaped mantlet for the bow machine gun, the improved commander‘s hatch, and the elimination of the round ammunition hatch on the rear left side of the turret.
