Heavy Tank Hunter VI (P) 8.8 cm Pak 43/2 L.71 “Elefant”

Heavy Tank Hunter VI (P) 8.8 cm Pak 43/2 L/71 “Elefant”.

The Panzerjäger “Tiger P” for 8.8 cm Pak 43/2 (Sf.), Sd.Kfz. 184, was a heavy tank hunter based on the chassis of the experimental VK 45.01 (P) Porsche tank design for the Panzer VI “Tiger II”. When Henschel received the production contract for the “Tiger II”, 90 of the tank hulls already produced for Porsche were instead redirected for use as assault guns.

The addition of the powerful 8.8 cm Pak 43/2 L.71 gun resulted in the s.Pz.Jg VI (P) “Ferdinand”. After the Battle of Kursk, 48 of the 50 remaining “Ferdinand” tank destroyers underwent an upgrade. These vehicles, now designated s.Pz.Jg VI (P) 8.8 cm Pak 43/2 L.71 “Elefant”, received a bow-mounted machine gun for self-defense, upgraded armour, Zimmerit coating for protection against magnetic shaped charges, wider tracks, and a commander‘s cupola on the roof.

The heavy tank destroyer VI (P) “Elefant” was heavily armoured and well-armed with its effective 8.8 cm Pak 43/2 L.71, but technical defects and its enormous fuel consumption repeatedly caused breakdowns, which would absolutely have to be taken into account in simulation games.
