StuG. IV

StuG. IV, Sd.Kfz. 167, 1:100 Roskopf 59.

The Sturmgeschütz IV, Sd.Kfz. 167, is a hybrid vehicle, mounting the proven superstructure of the StuG III Ausf. G onto existing Panzer IV chassis. The StuG. IV went into production in December 1943 at the Gruson plant in Magdeburg-Buckau, after tank production at the Altmärkische Kettenwerke (Alkett) had to be temporarily halted due to Allied bombing raids on Berlin. Because the Panzer IV chassis was longer, the driver was accommodated in a distinctive, box-shaped extension, the so-called Fahrererker driver‘s bay, located on the left front of the superstructure.

The StuG. IV could be issued as a tank replacement to Panzer formations and Panzerjäger tank hunter units that already had the necessary maintenance and workshop facilities for the Pz.Kpfw. IV medium tanks.

The remarkable battlefield successes of the assault artillery led, as the war progressed, to the increasing integration of assault guns into Panzerjäger and Panzer formations to compensate for the severe shortage of dedicated tank destroyers and tanks.
