Carbine 98 short
Karabiner 98 kurz (K98k, Kar. 98k), the standard service rifle of the Reichswehr and Wehrmacht introduced in 1935. 14 cm shorter and 300 g lighter than its predecessor, the Gewehr 98 long rifle, the “Carbine 98 short” was particularly easy to handle in built-up areas, field fortifications, and when mounting or dismounting vehicles.

The Airfix 1:32 scale German infantryman is properly armed with the Karabiner 98 kurz standard service rifle, but his ESCI Kamerad has to make do with an obsolete Gewehr 98. Note that the ESCI soldier is not aiming, he is firing his Gewehr 98 like an 18th century flintlock musket, simply pointing it in the general direction of the enemy and pulling the trigger.
