Madder Lake
Madder Lake (purple lake), red paint, is precipitated by soda from a decoction of garancin prepared with alum. Adding tin salt increases the saturation of the pigment. Madder lake is a beautiful and durable oil and water colour, non-toxic, also used as house paint and in wallpaper manufacture, see Rose Madder, cf. Alizarin.
