French 63rd Infantry Regiment de Planta, Seven Years’ War, 1756–1760

The Stoppa (Stoup) foreign regiment, established in 1674, was later known as Surbeck, d’Hemel, Besenvald, la Cour-au-Chantre from 1738 to 1745, then Balthazar, and in 1756 it received Baron von Planta as its new proprietor. During the Seven Years‘ War, the 63rd Planta Regiment fought at Hastenbeck, Roßbach, and Warburg.

Uniform

The État militaire de France, pour l’Année 1758 describes the uniform of infantry regiment Planat as follows: Habit rouge, veste, culotte & parements bleus, pattes ordinaires garnies de trois boutons blancs, veste bleue garnie de brandebourgs blancs & bordée d‘un galon de laine blanche, boutonnières bleues sur l‘habit, chapeau bordé d‘argent.

Red coat, blue waistcoat, breeches, and cuffs; horizontal pockets “ordinaires” trimmed with three white buttons; blue waistcoat trimmed with white buttonhole lace and edged with white wool braid; blue buttonhole lace on the coat; hat edged with silver.

Lucien Mouillard, on the other hand, depicts the uniform of the Planta Infantry Regiment as follows:

  • red coat with white metal buttons
  • horizontal coat pockets “ordinaires” with 4 buttons
  • red lapels with 8 buttons on the right, and buttonholes on the left
  • blue cuffs with 3 buttons
  • blue shoulder strap left
  • blue turnbacks with blue hearts
  • blue waistcoat with white lace and white metal buttons
  • blue breeches
  • white gaiters with white metal buttons
  • black tricorne hat with white edging
  • Grenadiers wore beards, and sabres
