Cavalry Guidon
Cavalry guidons trace their history to the medieval guidon, the field sign of the medieval lance, the smallest tactical unit of the middle ages. However, cavalry guidons are shorter, and of a rectangular or swallow-tailed design, which differs from the original triangular design of the medieval guidon.
US-Army and United States Air Force formations carry swallow-tailed company guidons even today to signify their unit designation and corps affiliation.
