The 155 mm howitzer M1 was developed in the 1930s as the successor to the 155 mm howitzer M-1918 and produced for the US Army at the Rock Island Arsenal from 1941 to 1953. It is a medium rifled field howitzer with a split-trail carriage. In 1962, the 155 mm howitzer M1A1 was redesignated the 155 mm howitzer M114A1. The 155 mm howitzer M1 served the US Army in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War until it was replaced by the 155 mm howitzer M198 in 1979. The 155 mm howitzer M1/M114 remains in service with many armies around the world today.

In firing position, the 155 mm howitzer M1 is supported on its mid-axle firing pedestal. The howitzer crew consists of the commander and eight gunners.
