The Mongolian Exhibits at EXPO 2000
The entrance to the outdoor section of the Mongolian exhibits at EXPO 2000 in Hannover, Germany. Jugding from the construction of the gate, Mongolian camps seem to have been fortified against surprise attack, using abatis and other simple barricades which can be constructed from materials found near the campsite. Ornate camp gates like this one are relatively easy to transport, and only one or two are needed to provide the colourful tent city with that extra touch of class to satisfy the noble nomad. Less important entrances to a large camp may have been simple affairs, perhaps just openings in the surrounding abatis which were routinely guarded and closed after nightfall.
