Unteroffiziere
Unteroffiziere (pl, German; lit. “under-officers”), military leaders of the lowest rank, who are promoted from the enlisted soldiers. In the German Empire, a distinction is made between “Unteroffiziere mit Portepee”: Oberfeuerwerker, Feldwebel, Wachtmeister, Vizefeldwebel, Vizewachtmeister, Wallmeister, Zeugfeldwebel, Depotvizefeldwebel, Unterveterinäre, Fähnriche, in the Navy the Oberdeckoffiziere, Deckoffiziere, Vizedeckoffiziere, Feldwebel, Wachtmeister, Stückmeister, Signalmeister, Vizefeldwebel, Stabshoboisten, Marineunterärzte, Einjährigfreiwillige Marineärzte, Fähnriche zur See; “Unteroffiziere ohne Portepee”: Feuerwerker, Sergeanten, Sanitätssergeanten and Sanitätsunteroffiziere, Unteroffiziere, Oberjäger; in the Navy the Maate, Sergeanten and Unteroffiziere.
On inner (garrison) duty, they are the immediate superiors of the soldiers, e.g. leaders of a Korporalschaft, or they provide economic services, like the Kammerunteroffizier is in charge of the clothing, the Schießunteroffizier of weapons and munitions, the Fourier of quarters, furniture and linen in the barrack rooms.
On outer (tactical) duty, they are the superiors of the smallest subsections of troops, as leaders of Gruppen (sections/squads), patrols, Unteroffiziersposten, artillery pieces. Cf. Offizierdiensttuer and Offizierstellvertreter. Einjährig-Freiwillige, who are not suited as reserve officers, are mustered out as Unteroffizieraspiranten (Cf. Freiwillige).
The value of an army depends largely on the quality of its Unteroffizierkorps, and all armies are therefore working diligently to improve the social standing as well as the theoretical and practical training of non-commissioned officers (cf. Unteroffizierschulen).
