Aspis

Aspis (Greek, pl. aspides), the Greek and Roman round shield, s. Shield. In some languages mistakenly called hoplon
.
The aspis pictured on the left shows the so-called Argive double-grip system for handling the shield. The hoplite slid his left forearm through the central leather or bronze armband (porpax) up to the elbow and grasped the finger-thick cord or leather grip (antilabe) on the edge of the shield with his left hand.
