Bedouins

Bedouins (Arabic: Bedawi, “desert dwellers”) are the nomadic desert inhabitants of Arabia, Syria, and North Africa. Their homeland and still their main settlement, from which they have spread in all directions, is the Najd in Saudi Arabia. On the Syrian borders, they control the caravan route from Aleppo and Damascus to Baghdad and Basra. The Bedouins in Palestine, especially between Rama and Jerusalem and on Mount Sinai, occupy the place of the ancient Edomites, Midianites, and other neighbouring peoples of the ancient Israelites. In North Africa, they constitute almost the entire population of Benghazi and Tripoli and a very high percentage of the population of Tunisia, Algeria, and Morocco; finally, they inhabit, either exclusively or mixed with Berbers, as Moors the westernmost part of the Sahara between Morocco and Senegal. The Beja are also traditionally considered Bedouins. See also Arabia.
